8 killed as van collides with lorry near Tumkur

TUMKUR, SEPT. 20. Eight persons, including two children and two women, were killed on the spot when a van by which they were travelling collided with a lorry near here early this morning.

Seventeen persons, all construction labourers, were taking the body of a relative, Basavalingappa, who died in Bangalore, to their native village, Alligeri in Yadgir taluk. Nine others in the van were seriously injured.

Santosh, driver of the lorry, which was coming to Bangalore from Suraj, told presspersons that the speeding van hit the lorry while it was trying to overtake another vehicle. He said he had just resumed his journey after a night halt about 2 km from the accident spot.

The accident occurred on National Highway No. 4 at Kuntegowdanahalli, in Kallambella police station limits.
