Yellow mosaic virus resistant black gram

THE YELLOW mosaic virus disease resistant black gram is a short duration type (65 - 70 days). It has produced higher seed yield of 775 and 826 kg/ha in rain fed and irrigated conditions.

A hybrid derivative of a cross between LBG 402 and LBG 17, the new variety has registered higher seed yield over the ruling varieties namely Vamban 1, Vamban 2 and CO 5 respectively. Besides high yield, this variety has more protein. Vamban 3 black gram is resistant to yellow mosaic disease and moderately resistant to powdery mildew. It recorded low incidence of pod borer damage than the ruling varieties Vamban 1, Vamban 2 and CO 5.

The variety is ideally suitable for cultivation throughout Tamil Nadu during all seasons. The crop can be grown during June-July, September- October and February-March seasons. Twenty kilogram of seed is required to cover one-hectare area. Before sowing, seeds should be treated with carbendazim 2 gram per kilogram of seed followed by bacterial culture treatment. The bacterial culture treatment should be done at an interval of at least 24 hours after fungicidal treatment. Three packets each of rhizobial culture and phosphobacteria are sufficient for treating the seeds required for one hectare.

While sowing, a spacing of 30 x 10 cm can be adopted to maintain the optimum population of 33 plants per m2. A nutrient dose of 25 kilogram of nitrogen and 50 kilogram of phosphorous per hectare is prescribed. Two hand weeding on 15th and 30th days after sowing or preemergence application of pendimethalin at 2 litres per hectare or fluchloralin at 1.5 litres per hectare on 3rd day after sowing followed by one hand weeding on 30 days after sowing is recommended to avoid weeds.

During the early stage spraying of dimethoate at 200 millilitre per hectare to control sucking pests is recommended. To control pod borers, spraying with carbaryl 50 per cent WP at one kilogram per hectare or spraying with monocrotophos 500 millilitre per hectare is recommended.
