Postal unions threaten strike
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, SEPT. 23. Postal federations have warned of a nation-
wide strike if their demands were not addressed by the Government
to their satisfaction.
The main stumbling block is stated to be their demand for pension
for about three lakh part-time employees serving rural areas. The
federations have sought a meeting with the Union Communications
Minister, Mr. Ram Vilas Paswan, and the Minister of State, Mr.
Tapan Sikdar, to discuss the Government's alleged ignorance of
the deadline for settlement of pending grievances.
The unions said the Government had agreed to implement a charter
of demands on May 1 this year. It was also agreed that these
demands would be settled by August 31. The federations said there
had been no progress on any of the issues. The federations are
likely to meet next week to discuss the future course of action.
