Mumbai police seek Chhota Rajan's extradition

By Amit Baruah

SINGAPORE, SEPT. 23. The Mumbai police has sought the extradition of injured underworld don, Chhota Rajan, in a request made to Thai police through Interpol, informed sources said from Bangkok today. Chhota Rajan alias Vijay Daman, was shot at and wounded in a posh Bangkok apartment by several gunmen on September 15. While Rohit d'Souza, an Indian ``businessman'' was killed, his wife, Ms. Sikandi Hama, was injured.

The sources were, however, quick to clarify that no official Government-to-Government request for the extradition of Chhota Rajan to India had been made as Thailand and India do not have an extradition treaty. ``In the first instance, a police-to- police request for assistance has been sent through Interpol. The next step will now have to be taken by the Thai police,'' they said.

The city's Metropolitan Police Bureau has already received information on Chhota Rajan's background, including photographs and fingerprints, from the Indian police, The Bangkok Post reported.

The papers received described Rajan as a member of an outlawed Indian gang, wanted for at least 10 murders in India and Australia. He would be fingerprinted by Thai police and the prints matched with those received from India to verify his identity.

The newspaper quoted Bangkok's assistant police chief as saying that Chhota Rajan was still in a serious condition and unable to make a statement to the police.
