Major setback for BJP, IUML

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, SEPT. 28. The BJP and the IUML are suffered major setbacks in the election to the Corporation council. The IUML, which had two members, could not even return one of them to the council.

The sitting IUML members were defeated by CPI(M) candidates. Mr. Karamana Maheen was defeated by Mr. Mohammed Kasim by a margin of 546 votes and Mr. Rasheed by 238 votes by Mr. K. Krishnankutty.

The BJP council party leader, Mr.P.Ashok Kumar, lost to Mr. Vijayan of the CPI(M) in Perumthanni ward by 159 votes and the BJP candidate, Mr. Nedumam V. Mohan, won the Vellar seat with a margin of 291 votes defeating the UDF candidate, Mr.M.Ahammed. The CPI(M) candidate finished third securing 810 votes. The BJP also lost the Sreekanteswaram, Fort wards which are its strongholds to the CPI(M) and the Congress(I).

The PDP improved its position in the council by winning one more seat. The lone councillor, Mr. Poonthura Siraj, was elected from Ambalathara for 948 votes and another PDP candidate, Ms. Nufaisa Beevi, won from Bheemapally for 434 votes.

It was a spectacular victory for the Independent candidate, Mr. Chalai Mohanan. Mr. Mohanan who was expelled from the CPI(M) had defeated the LDF and UDF candidates twice in Chalai. Now, when Chalai ward was reserved for women, Mr. Mohanan moved to the Manacaud ward where he won for 137 votes. The Congress(I) candidate, Mr. N. Unnikrishnan Nair, came runners up and the LDF candidate came third.

Another remarkable victory was made by Mr.Palayam Rajan of the NCP. Mr. Rajan wrested the seat from the UDF after 11 years. Moreover, Mr. Rajan quit the Congress(I) when he was denied ticket and joined the NCP and won the seat.

The LDF candidate in Edakkode ward, Mr.V.S.Padmakumar, won with a highest margin of 1,420 votes. The sitting Congress(I) councillor of Thampanoor ward, Mr.Thampanoor Satish, also won with an impressive margin of 974 votes.

Many candidates had to be satisfied with a two-digit margin. Mr. R. Madhavan Nair, Congress(I) candidate in Kalady, was the one who had the lowest margin of three votes. The Congress(I) candidate in Peroorkada, Mr.D.Sudarshan, won for 24 votes, the CPI(M) candidate in Pongumoodu ward won with a margin of 23 votes.

Mr. Kunnkuzhi Manoharan, CPI(M) candidate in Kunnukuzhi, won for 18 votes, and Mr.K.C.Vikraman, CPI(M) candidate in Pangode for 89 votes. In Vanchiyoor, Ms. Chandrika Radhakrishnan of the Congress(I) defeated Ms. Krishna Kumari of the CPI(M) by 48 votes. The CPI candidate in Nemom, Mr. G. R. Anil won for 66 votes, Brigit Franklin of CPI in Poundukadavu for 16 votes. Ms. V.K.Chitralekha of CPI(M) in Estate ward got a narrow margin of seven votes.
