Marked by devotion

VIJAYALAKSHMI SUBRAMANIAM did a commendable job in her vocal concert for the TTD Information Centre, Chennai, under the Sravanam series on September 24.

She commenced her recital with the Dikshitar kriti ``Siddhi Vinayakam'' in Shanmukhapriya (Chamaram in Dikshitar nomenclature) with a few rounds of lively swaras.

``Narayana Ninna Naamada'', in Suddhadhanyasi was presented next with a lot of bhava and bhakti.

Sahana raga was taken up for elaboration with a composition of Patnam Subramania Iyer ``Rama ika nannu''.

A rakti raga like Sahana needs to be handed with a lot of sensitivity to bring out its salient features and the artiste did remarkably well.

Endowed with a rich and powerful voice, she negotiated the delicate nuances of the raga admirably.

A rich and vibrant Bhairavi followed. ``Alamelu Manga nee abhinava roopamu'', a composition of Annamacharya, tuned by Nedunuri Krishnamurthy was offered at a relaxed pace, befitting the alapana. ``Annapurne Visalakshi'', an evergreen composition of Muthuswami Dikshitar created the ambience for the main course to follow.

The Tyagaraja masterpiece in Varali, ``Eti Janmamidi'', was taken up as the major item for the evening.

A leisurely alapana, in the right kalapramana endeared the vocalist to the audience.

S. Varadarajan provided excellent violin support. His alapanas of Sahana and Varali were particularly noteworthy.

Neyveli Skandasubramaniam on the mridangam and Papanasam Sethuraman on the kanjira gave lively accompaniment right through the concert.

Their tani was precise and engaging.
