Verdict in TANSI cases tomorrow

CHENNAI, OCT. 7. Judgments in the two TANSI land deal cases, in which the former Chief Minister, Ms.Jayalalitha, is the main accused, will be delivered by the Special Judge-III, Mr. P. Anbazhagan, on Monday (October 9).

Besides Ms. Jayalalitha, her close associate, Ms. Sasikala, the former CMD, TANSI, Mr.T.R.Srinivasan, former Rural Industries Minister, Mr. Mohammed Asif, the then Deputy Collector (stamps), Mr. Nagarajan and Joint Secretary to Chief Minister, Mr. Karpoorasundarapandian, figure as accused in the cases.

The cases pertain to the alleged purchase of TANSI foundry and enamelled wire units lands by Jaya Publications and Sasi Enterprises, `much below the guideline value,' thereby causing wrongful loss to the government to the total extent of about 4.08 crores, including stamp duty. The chargesheets in the cases were filed on November 15, 1996 and October 23, 1997 respectively and trial commenced on July 5, 1999 and August 16, 1999. Fifty prosecution witnesses and 12 defence witnesses were examined in the two cases. Final arguments concluded on September 29.
