By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, OCT. 6. The Department of Posts is organising an `on-the-spot stamp design contest' for school students on October 8 as part of the postal week celebrations. The contest will be held at Saraswathi Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Vadapalani.

The competition, which will open at 10 a.m. will be in two categories, juniors (upto 12 years) and senior (12 to 18 years). The theme for the design is `the role of information technology in bringing the world closer together.'

The students will have to bring their own writing/drawing materials and certificate in proof of age from the school. The best entries in each category will be given cash awards at State level and sent for final selection at All India level. The selected designs will be included for depicting in stamps for 2001.

A philatelic counter will be opened at the venue where commemorative stamps, first day covers and information brochures issued for the last one year will be available for sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Venues for other centres may be ascertained from the Senior Superintendent of Post Offices of the respective postal divisions.
