Scheme for economic improvement of minorities
By Our Staff Reporter
PONDICHERRY, OCT. 7. The Pondicherry Backward Classes and
Minorities Development Corporation has chalked out a novel scheme
to assess the specific schemes that would improve the economic
lot of minorities in the Union Territory so that necessary
financial assistance through banks could be arranged.
Ms. S. Banumathi, Managing Director of the Corporation, has
announced that a team of officials of the Corporation would camp
in Sulthanpet near Villianoor on October 10 to hold parleys with
the local opinion leaders so that the specific schemes required
by the citizens (predominantly Muslim population) could be
assessed and finalised by the Corporation and to establish a tie-
up with the local service area branch of the nationalised bank
for assistance.
Mr. V. Swaminathan, General Manager of the Corporation, would be
among the officers who would listen to the requirements of the
minority community in Sultanpet.
Such camps would be held in six centres in a phased manner in the
course of this year and relevant schemes as required by targeted
group would be finalised. This approach is to ensure that needs of
the beneficiaries were realised and met instead of imposing the
schemes from above. It is learnt that the National Minorities
Development Corporation has announced a grant of Rs 46 lakhs for
the Pondicherry Corporation. The local Corporation had hit upon
the new approach of meeting the beneficiaries (minorities) and
frame the schemes that are much sought after by them.
