Plea for uninterrupted power supply

By Our Staff Reporter

PONDICHERRY, OCT. 7. Mr. R. Shanmugasundaram, president of Muthialpet Consumer Group, said here on Friday that he had requested the authorities to take steps to ensure that there was no shutdown in power supply in the area and also suggested that an experts group could be requisitioned from Singapore to reinforce the modalities for maintenance of power equipments here. He said that Solai Nagar block was particularly facing protracted and unscheduled power breakdowns recently.

He said that he had placed before the Traffic police at a meeting of the Police and People Advisory Committee a number of suggestions to strengthen the traffic scenario in Pondicherry. He said a traffic signal should be installed at the junction of Mahatma Gandhi Road and Ezhai Mariamman Koil Street on the main street. Frequent accidents occurred near the Salai Theru because of congested parking of vehicles near the shops functioning in the premises of the municipal complex.

Mr. Shanmugasundaram said he had requested the Traffic authorities to ensure that the Central prison functioning in the heart of the Nehru Street should be shifted to a site outside Pondicherry town limits. The space that would be consequently available could be used as parking slots for vehicles.

He also said a ban should be imposed on plying of motorised fish carts as they posed a threat to the safety of other road users. Mini vans could be permitted in their place, he suggested.

The headlights of all vehicles should be fixed with `bull's eye marks' so that the dazzling light could be controlled.
