Registrar hears cassettes on evidence

MUMBAI, OCT. 7. On a direction by a special court, the Registrar today heard audio cassettes which contain alleged telephonic conversations among the dismissed judge, Mr. J. W. Singh, underworld don, Chhota Shakeel and the deceased lawyer, Liyakat Ali Shaikh.

The cassettes were being heard by the Registrar to make a transcript of the alleged conversations among the trio for handing them over to the accused.

Mr. Singh, his lawyer and investigation officer were allowed to be present when the Registrar was making the transcript. The work could not conclude and will continue next week.

The Designated Judge, Mr. A.P. Bhangale, has directed the Registrar to hand over the cassettes to the accused today.

Police claim to have recorded three telephonic talks among the three which allegedly indicate that Mr.Singh had `hired' goons to recover his chit fund money amounting to Rs.40 lakhs.

Mr.Singh continues to be lodged in the high security cell at the central prison here. On October 9, the Mumbai High Court would hear his petition seeking bail and challenging police decision to book him under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA).
