U.S. eases curbs on Yugoslavia
WASHINGTON: The United States has decided to lift economic
sanctions against Yugosalvia but said it would retain the ban on
loans to the Balkan nation until the fate of the former
President, Mr. Slobodan Milosevic, was decided. In a statement,
the U.S. President, Mr. Bill Clinton, said he had directed the
State Treasury Department ``to take immediate steps to begin
lifting the sanctions, except those targeted against members of
the former regime.'' Mr. Clinton wants Mr. Milosevic tried as a
war criminal and is upset that he continues to have an influence
in Yugoslav politics despite losing the recent presidential race
to Mr. Vojislav Kostounica.
