Serbian polls on Dec. 24
BELGRADE: The former Yugoslav President, Mr. Slobodan Milosevic's
party agreed with pro-democracy leaders on Friday to hold Serbian
parliamentary elections on December 24, a Belgrade radio station
said. Mr. Vladan Batic, a leader of the Democratic Opposition of
Serbia (DOS) which backs the new President, Mr. Vojislav
Kostounica, told the independent B92 Radio that the parties had
resumed official negotiations after a two-day break. He said the
parties had also agreed to form a transitional Serbian
Government. Reformists had said earlier this week that all the
main parties had agreed to hold elections on December 17. But Mr.
Milosevic's Socialists later appeared to go back on the deal,
saying they would continue to rule Serbia.
