Grand civic reception for Malleswari

HYDERABAD, OCT. 13. Mrs. Karnam Malleswari, who with her weightlifting wizardry at Sydney Olympics snatched some prestige for the country by winning a bronze with a flawless clean and jerk, was accorded a grand civic reception at the sprawling gaily-lit Lal Bahadur Stadium on Friday night.

Felicitating Mrs. Malleswari, the Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, presented her a bagful of rewards - patta for a 530 square yard plot in the posh Jubilee Hills area here worth Rs. 25 lakhs, another Rs. 25 lakhs for construction of a house and Rs. 10 lakh as incentive, all totalling Rs. 60 lakhs. In addition, he promised to allot one-acre site in consultation with her for setting up ``Malleswari Weightlifting Academy'' in Hyderabad. The Governor, Dr. C. Rangarajan, the Lok Sabha Speaker, Mr. G. M. C. Balayogi, the Union Minister of State for Urban Development Mr. B. Dattatreya, Mr. Suresh Kalmadi, president of the Indian Olympic Association, Mrs. K. Pratibha Bharathi, Speaker of State Assembly, attended.
