CM to inaugurate NERTC today

By Our Staff Correspondent

GULBARGA, OCT. 13. The North-eastern Road Transport Corporation (NERTC) will be inaugurated by the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M. Krishna, here tomorrow.

The previous Janata Dal Government had decided to split the KSRTC and form the North-western Road Transport Corporation in Hubli, covering the Bombay Karnataka area, and constitute NERTC to cover the Hyderabad Karnataka region. Though the NWRTC was constituted amid protest from the workers, the setting up of the NERTC was delayed.

The Gulbarga Division of the KSRTC had the dubious record of remaining in the red. In the past two years the Gulbarga division had incurred a total loss of Rs. 4,754.54 lakhs. This year, however, up to June, the division showed some signs of recovery ad made a profit of Rs. 202.43 lakhs for the first time.

The new corporation would serve the districts of Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal and Bellary, covering more than 5.69 lakh km everyday.

The Transport Minister, Mr. C.R. Sageer Ahmed, said that of the 4,072 villages coming under the jurisdiction of the corporation, NERTC would operate services to about 3,420 villages.

Some 350 to 400 new buses would be added to the existing fleet to extend services to areas which had not been covered so far. During 2001-2002 1,000 more buses would be added to the fleet, he said.

The new corporation would be headed by Mr. K.P. Simha, who is Vice-President and Managing Director of the KSRTC. It will also have nine directors.
