Sony to focus on southern region

CHENNAI, OCT. 13. Sony India, a subsidiary of Sony Corporation,
Japan, is planning to tap the huge market potential for audio and
video products in the southern region. The company had chosen
Tamil Nadu as the thrust area for implementing its rural
marketing strategy in August this year.
Addressing presspersons here today Mr. Teruo Ishii, Managing
Director, Sony India, said the southern region had emerged as an
important investment destination for multinationals and Sony
India was making consistent efforts to further expand its
marketing infrastructure network in this region. Mr. Ishii was
here in connection with the inauguration of ``Sony Vision
Exhibition'', an annual showcase of Sony products, which was
being conducted for the sixth consecutive year here.
He said the company had already introduced in the southern market
its latest products such as Wega range of flat televisions, mini
hi-fi audio systems, digital versatile disc players and
affordable range of audio systems. Sony India had opened 15
exclusive shops under the name ``Sony World'' and Chennai had one
such shop. The plan was to open one more by the end of this year
here and by March the total of such shops would go up to 22 or
23.
Sony World was different from regular dealer channels as these
shops had the expertise to handle as many products as possible
and sell the latest technology products.
Mr. Ishii said the Sony India was making a strong representation
to its parent in Tokyo to introduce more new products in India
and hoped that notebook PCs and GSM cellular phones would be sold
from the next fiscal year.
Mr. Prem K. Nair, Deputy Director and GM (sales & service), said
flat television sets were highly popular in Japan and hoped India
would become a potential market for these products as a shift was
already taking place.
