Dave Richards to quit

NAIROBI, OCT. 15. The Chief Executive of the International Cricket Council (ICC), Mr. David Richards, will return to native Australia next year. The ICC will appoint a new Chief Executive to take over from Mr. Richards.

In a press release here, the ICC President, Mr. Malcolm Gray, said ``David has led the ICC tremendously effectively since his appointment in 1993. In particular, he played a key role in negotiating the contract which the World Sports Group/News Corporation which will bring at least $ 550 million into the ICC over the next seven years. The ICC Development Programme was his creation and during his term the ICC has evolved as an effective international sporting organisation.''

Mr. Richards, in accordance with his contract, had given the ICC a 12-month notice and will keep the post until a replacement is found.

On his decision, Mr. Richards said ``it has been a privilege to work with the member countries in building the new ICC. We have reached a point where the ICC has the financial resources and governance to take the next step in its growth as the governing body of world cricket. The job is never complete, but the next phase requires a commitment of at least five years. It is time for a new Chief Executive to take the ICC forward.''

The process to appoint a new Chief Executive, according to the press release, will be determined at the ICC Executive Board meeting here on October 16 and 17.
