Records tumble in pool and track
SYDNEY, OCT. 21. Records tumbled in the pool and on the track at
the Sydney Paralympic Games on Saturday with Canadian and
European swimmers dominating in the water and an Englishman
starring on land.
Nine world records were set at the aquatic centre, reputedly the
fastest pool in the world, along with three Paralympic records in
a session bristling with Canadian and European swimmers.
Vision-impaired Englishman Bob Matthews won the first track gold
of the athletics program. Matthews, competing in his sixth
consecutive Paralympic Games, won the 10,000 metres in 35:23.07.
In the high jump, Ruslan Sivitski of Belarus set a new world mark
of 2.02m. Britain leads the medal tally on the third day of
competition, followed by France, Spain, the United States and
Australia.
Four powerlifters test positive Meanwhile, four powerlifters were
expelled from the Games after testing positive to performance-
enhancing drugs.
The International Paralympic Committee (IPC) identified the four
as Romanian Aurel Berbec, Bulgarian Radko Radev, Marina Diakonova
of Russia and Ali Mahmoudikordkheili of Iran.
