Medha on fast

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHOPAL, OCT. 25. The Narmada Bachao Andolan leader, Ms. Medha Patkar, today chose Bhopal for sitting on a five-day protest fast to build up public opinion against the recent Supreme Court judgment allowing construction of the Sardar Sarovar dam in Gujarat.

A large number of tribals, whose land would be submerged by the dam, also began a sit-in agitation at the venue, the residence of the Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister. A banner at the protest site said: ``We have the right over the Narmada Valley no matter what the law says.''

Talking to presspersons here, Ms. Patkar said she had chosen Bhopal as the venue since the maximum number of people who were getting displaced or affected by the dam belonged to that State.
