Ethnic spread
THE EARTHY colours of Gujarat were seen in enticing craft forms
at Gurjari, which recently held a festival sale at its premises
on Khader Nawaz Khan Road. From bright lacquered Sankheda baithak
furniture to intricately carved metal work doors, tie and dye
saris, block printed textiles and embroidered `torans', the
range, reflects the melange of stunning colours craftsmanship
typical of Gujarat's craft culture.
There is much that is different at `Gurjari'. Embroidered leather
items with ingenious cut work shaped into wall hangings,
`juttis', bowls and even hair clips! Metal work wall hangings
that portray Ganeshas, animals and birds and much more. Puppets,
Sankheda combined with jute for contemporary furniture concepts,
painted wood crafted artefacts, `marquetry' work in furniture and
chunky `folk' jewellery in metal, beads, ceramics, agate and
silver ...
But it is the block prints, tie and dye, embroidery and mirror
work which cast a spell at Gurjari. While bright block prints
make distinct textile statements on bedspreads, saris, men's wear
and salwar kurta ensembles, both tie and dye saris and
embroidered items are perfectly attuned for festive wear. The
Patola and Gharchola saris are particularly compelling. The
embroidered items crafted by the Rabari and other tribes of
Gujarat include festive pieces such as `Ganesh Sthapana' wall
hangings and colourful torans. Embroidered mirror work cushions,
folders and office organisers are also available.
And for the environment-conscious there are colourful, stuffed
animal and bird puppets and animals forms made of waste cloth.
