Mahanta accuses 'particular' party of killings
GUWAHATI, NOV. 13. The Assam Chief Minister, Mr. Prafulla Kumar
Mahanta, today alleged that a particular political party known
for its long `secret association with extremist outfits' was
involved in the recent mass killings in Assam.
``There is clear evidence of that particular political party's
involvement in the Kakojan (Tinsukia) killings,'' as the persons
arrested in connection with the incident had made confessions in
this regard, he said and played video recordings of their
`confessions' before presspersons here.
``A local leader of that party in Kakojan gave shelter to the
ULFA boys in his home the previous night (October 21) and the
party members identified the persons to be killed by ULFA,'' Mr.
Mahanta said.
Declining to name the political party, the Chief Minister said
the party was involved in the killings to prove its existence and
malign the Government.
Mr. Mahanta said allegations in certain quarters about the
alleged involvement of an AGP member in the Nalbari killings were
``baseless and politically motivated.''
He said there were Intelligence reports that some political
parties could indulge in violence in the run-up to the State
Assembly elections due next year to ``disgrace'' the Government.
The Government had already submitted a report to the Union Home
Ministry on the issue, he added.
