Polluting units must move out: Jagmohan
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, NOV. 24. The Urban Development Minister, Mr. Jagmohan,
today told the Lok Sabha that while he was willing to call a
meeting of the local MPs, citizens and members of industry, the
``polluting units in the city would have to be relocated''.
Replying to a call attention motion moved by his party colleague
and MP from Delhi, Mr. Madan Lal Khurana, Mr. Jagmohan stood his
ground in the face of some hostile questioning from all sides.
The issue of relocating industrial units away from residential
areas has been the subject of considerable debate both inside and
outside the House and this afternoon the Lok Sabha witnessed an
animated discussion.
The Left and the RJD members staged a walk-out in protest. But
Mr. Jagmohan refused to budge and appeared to have won the
argument in the end, with some help from the former Prime
Minister, Mr. Chandra Shekhar.
Mr. Chandra Shekhar told the members that calling the Minister
names would not solve the problem. Delhi was becoming
unmanageable as ``10,000 people were migrating to the city
everyday''. The masterplan was not something that could be
amended everyday, he said and chided Mr. Khurana for making
provocative demands.
