Much needed scheme
Sir, - Our heart-felt gratitude goes to the Central Government
and the public sector banks as they have decided to grant
`educational loans' to the poor students to continue their
education (``Bank loans for education, farm lands,'' The Hindu,
Nov. 15). While there are so many schemes to help the students
belonging to certain castes irrespective of their financial
condition or status, the poor among the rest of the castes were
left helpless so far. Thus this is a much needed scheme.
The government and the lending banks must be very careful in
granting the loans to the deserving students only. Caste and
political or any other influence should not reduce the chances of
the deserving students from receiving the loans. Further the
lending bank must see that the amount got through these loans is
utilised for educational purpose only; it must have an eye on the
progress of the recipient continuously.
Further the recipients of such loans may be encouraged, on
completing their education and securing a job, to create an
endowment fund in order to help the next generation students.
