Dholakia, 'Asian of year 2000'

LONDON, NOV. 26. Lord Navnit Dholakia, president of the Liberal Democrats, NRI and the first Asian to head a major British political party, has been declared as the ``Asian of the year 2000''.

The awards are given annually by the Asian Who's Who International, established by Mr. J.S. Sachar.

The who's who has grown from its first edition in 1974 with 250 entries to over 2000 now.

Lord Dholakia, who was chosen unanimously by a seven- member committee, said ``the Asian today wants not just a slice of the cake of life and power here, but wishes to be one of those who cut that cake.''

The honours, he said, made one more humble.

Mr. Charles Kennedy, leader of the Liberal Democrats, said the presence of so many Asian peers and MPs in the two Houses of Parliament symbolised the integration of the community and the role they play in British society and politics.
