Celebrating with music

HUNDRED YEARS ago, Dr. Ida Sophia Scudder founded the Christian Medical College and Hospital in Vellore, with just one bed. Today, it is one of the most important medical centres in the country. As part of the centenary celebrations of the CMC, Vellore, the Chennai chapter of the CMC Alumanae Association is organising a piano recital by French-Canadian Stephane Lemelin on December 4, 7.30 p.m., at the Royal Meridien Hotel. Lemelin's connection with the Scudder family is through a friend, Read Scudder Sherman, a great nephew of Dr. Ida. Says Lemelin, "I have found the Scudder story and particularly, Dr Ida's biography extremely inspiring." If you want to be part of the celebrations, dial 4403559/8252211/98410 49140.

A riot of colours

GLORIA DAVID is eight years old. But she is not normal. She suffers from a rare skin disease, epidermolysis bullosa. (her skin is very fragile and can peel off at the slightest pressure). However, she is a gfted painter. Gloria has more than 300 paintings to her credit. Of these, about 200 are to be displayed at an exhibition-cum-sale. Organised by The Madras School of Social Work, as part of a project, the exhibition is being held on November 29 and 30, at the Guild of Service hall, 32, Casa Major Road, Egmore. Exhibition of paintings

CONTINUING WITH the subject of paintings, the Apparao Galleries is organising a show from December 1 to 10, Tuesday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 7.00 p.m., Sundays 1.00 p.m. to 7.00 p.m. The artist featured is S. Harshavardhana. About 15 of his works are to be displayed. The show will be on at the Galleries premises, 7, Wallace gardens 3rd street (Ph:8272226).
