Police enforce peace during Delhi bandh
The ``Delhi bandh'' - called by
industrialists and workers to protest the closure of polluting
units - passed off peacefully today as police clamped down on the
protesters, preventing any major outbreak of violence.
Jagmohan on the mat
The Union Urban Development Minister, Mr.
Jagmohan's run-ins with politicians, both within his party and
outside, continues unabated. In the eye of the storm over the
Delhi masterplan, he found himself pilloried once again in both
Houses of Parliament.
Madhavan report too finds Azhar guilty
The Madhavan report has confirmed the
findings of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and named
former skipper, Mohammad Azharuddin, guilty of match-fixing.
Prabhakaran wants talks, 'liberation' too
The LTTE leader, Mr. Velupillai Prabhakaran,
today said he was prepared for ``unconditional talks'' but
demanded that the Government first ``de-escalate'' the war and
create a ``conducive'' atmosphere for negotiations, and pledged
in the same breath to reconquer Jaffna.
Bush certified winner in Florida
The Texas Governor, Mr. George W. Bush, who
has been certified winner of the U.S. presidential election in
Florida, has urged the Vice-President, Mr. Al Gore, to concede
the election. ``Now that the votes are counted, it is time for
the votes to count,'' he said from Austin, Texas. With the
State's 25 electoral college votes, Mr. Bush now has 271 votes
against 267 for Mr. Gore.
CJI age document: CBI probe ordered
The Supreme Court today ordered a Central
Bureau of Investigation probe to establish the authenticity of
the document purported to have been sent by the General Council
of the Bar, London, on September 4 under the name of S. Behr to
Sohal and Co., regarding the age of the Chief Justice of India,
Dr. A.S. Anand. (This document, giving the year of birth of the
CJI as 1934, finds a place in Mr. Ram Jethmalani's book released
recently).
J&K truce takes effect
Security forces today suspended all combat
operations in Jammu and Kashmir in line with the Ramzan
ceasefire, hours ahead of commencement of the holy month, but
were on a high alert to thwart any attempt by militant groups to
carry out violent activities in the State which remained
peaceful, official sources in New Delhi said.
Putin hails ceasefire
The Russian Federation tonight welcomed the
unilateral Indian ceasefire in Jammu and Kashmir and hoped that
Pakistan and the militants would respond positively to the
initiative.
