Annual music and dance festival begins tomorrow
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, NOV. 28. The crown in the cultural calendar of the
city, the annual Pandit Motiram and Pandit Maniram Sangeet
Samaroh - 2000, would get under way here on November 30.
The music and dance fiesta, organised by the Hindustani singing
legend, Pandit Jasraj, in memory of his father, who died in
Hyderabad in 1934 hours before he was to be honoured as the State
musician by the then Nizam, enters its 30th edition this year.
The four-day cultural extravaganza, which has emerged as a
platform for many a budding artiste of the nation over the years,
would be held in the magnificent heritage well of the Central
Institute of English and Foreign Languages on the Osmania
University campus.
"The festival is open to everyone and free of cost. This is an
annual ritual done with utmost devotion by my husband," the
Hindustani maestro's wife, Mrs. Madhura Jasraj, said at a press
conference here on Tuesday.
The festival features Pandit Jasraj himself on the first day
besides Pandit Satish Vyas (santoor).
``Hyderabad is very dear to him and he personally chooses the
performing artistes, the younger lot in particular," said Mr.
Mohan G. Hemmadi of Surmandal, one of the organisers. The
festival has a different beginning this year with the screening
of a 46-minute documentary made on Pandit Jasraj by his wife!
The Vice-Chancellor of CIEFL, Prof. Pramod Talgeri, regretted
that the rich Indian classical music was being relegated in the
cacophony of consumerism. And it was festivals of music and dance
like these that would sustain the rich traditions.
APSRTC buses would be available for the convenience of the people
after the concert every day.
