Dell Computer to expand India operations

By Our Corporate Reporter

CHENNAI, NOV. 28. Dell, the leading U.S. direct computer systems company and a premier provider of internet infrastructure, has unveiled its plans to further leverage its direct sales model in the Indian market.

Addressing presspersons here today, Mr. Ron Goh, Vice President, Dell Computer Corporation, said the company considered India as a significant market. The buying process would be facilitated by the use of an Internet enabled customer billing process in the near future, along with a state-of-the-art call centre-based approach for purchasing customised computer systems. This process is backed by a comprehensive online cum telephone based technical support team for prompt next-day, onsite service.

Mr. Goh said the company would be focussing on big corporates, educational institutions, SMEs (small and medium enterprises) and SOHO (small office home office) segments for its notebook and desktop PCs. It plans to increase the number of Internet users in India by marketing products that integrate wireless into Dell products.

Though Dell thought of entering the Chinese and Indian markets together last year, the simplified procedures and policies of China enabled the company to start its operations there first.

The situation in India had now improved a lot with the Government providing encouragement to multinationals. Dell would be taking advantage of the vast software and IT talent available in India and would be working with leading Indian software developers.

Dell through an agreement with Unisys worldwide has already an arrangement with Tata Infotech which operates 11 service centres throughout India for Dell customers. Tata Infotech also helps Dell operate spare part depots in six centres.

Asked whether Dell was planning to have its manufacturing facilities in India Mr. Goh said there were no such plans as the company was having enough capacity to manufacture its entire line of computer systems in each of its locations in Austin and Nashville in the U.S., Eldorado do Sul, Brazil (for the Americas), Limerick in Ireland (for Europe, Middle East and Africa); Penang in Malaysia (for Asia Pacific and Japan) and Xiamen (for China).
