Scuffle in Orissa Assembly

By Our Staff Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR, NOV. 29. The winter session of the Orissa Assembly began on a stormy note today as members of the ruling BJD-BJP alliance and the Opposition Congress came to blows over the drought situation in the State.

Even though the Government Chief Whip had moved a motion for a discussion on the drought situation, several Congress members rushed to the well of the House at the beginning of the question hour demanding a special discussion on the issue before the House went ahead with the routine proceedings.

Trouble started when one of the Congress members present in the well attempted to pull down the microphone kept on the Speaker's table. Some members of the ruling alliance then rushed to the well asking the Congress members to go back to their seats and, in the process, both groups were seen pushing each other and engaging in fisticuffs.

The Speaker, Mr. Sarat Kumar Kar, adjourned the House for 15 minutes amidst pandemonium. After the proceedings resumed, the matter was discussed again and the Congress members went back to their seats after the House decided to have a special discussion on drought and concluded that the Business Advisory Committee should meet to fix the date and time for the discussion.
