DGP refutes APCLC charge
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, NOV. 30. The Director-General of Police, Mr. H.J.
Dora, has refuted the charge levelled by the Andhra Pradesh Civil
Liberties Committee (APCLC) and other Left parties that the
police was patronising the killers of Purushotham, a civil rights
activist.
Speaking to presspersons here on Thursday, Mr. Dora asserted that
the police had got nothing to do with the surrendered naxalites.
"We will not tolerate any illegal activity by the surrendered
naxalites", Mr. Dora said when his attention was drawn to
criticism that the surrendered naxals were indulging in
extortion.
The DGP maintained that the APCLC was at liberty to make any sort
of criticism against the police and his department was not
bothered about the APCLC charges, since the organisation had lost
its credibility. It was only championing the cause of extremists.
Asked specifically whether Nayeemuddin, one of the alleged
killers of Purushotham, was enjoying police support, Mr. Dora
shot back saying that the department would never associate with
someone who was an accused in killing of the former DIG, Vyas.
Asked about the continuing threat calls being made to poet Mr.
Varavara Rao, the DGP said the department was also worried about
the safety of the poet. He would request the Government to allot
a gunman to Mr. Rao. On rehabilitation of the surrendered cadres,
Mr. Dora conceded that there was some delay in the rehabilitation
process.
Recently, the Chief Minister, Mr. N. Chandrababu Naidu, had asked
all the Ministers incharge of districts to monitor the progress
of rehabilitation process and submit a note to the GAD regularly
so that the Cabinet could also discuss the issue regularly.
