Film Review: ''Bride of Chucky''
THE GROTESQUE, demoniac doll, Chucky, returns to the screen after
a long gap (first appeared in ``Child's Play'' in 1988) in
Universal's ``Bride of Chucky''. This time round, Chucky is
brought back to `life' by his girlfriend, Tiffany (played by
Jennifer Tilly), who loves the smell of blood as much as Chucky
(the voice of Brad Dourif). Their idea of having a good time is a
bit unusual... kill anybody and everybody who comes their way!
Their weapons could range from mirrors to nails to the more
common gun!
Into their maniacal world are drawn newlyweds Jesse (Nick
Stabile) and Jade (Katherine Heigl), unwittingly, of course. What
follows is a horrifying journey to hell as far as the couple is
concerned, a trip wrought with mindless violence laced with black
magic and voodoo!
The film, directed by Hong Kong director Ronnu Yu, stars actors
who are virtually unknown, except for perhaps Jennifer Tilly. One
wonders why big studios spend money on such films that offer
nothing by way of art or aesthetics. In films of this genre, the
plot is only incidental. The music and the cinematography play
pivotal roles, but ``Bride of Chucky'' cannot boast of either
good music or camera movements which deliberately shock the
viewer.
Also, dolls stand for something cute and cuddly, but in the film
their image takes a sound beating.
On the whole, an unexciting and unpleasant experience.
