Govt. firm on shifting Museums Directorate
By Our Staff Correspondent
MYSORE, DEC. 2. The Minister of State for Kannada and Culture,
Ms. Rani Satish, said here on Saturday that the Government was
determined to shift the office of the Directorate of Archaeology
and Museums from Mysore to Hampi. Addressing presspersons, she
said there was resistance from the officials to the decision to
shift the office, but the Government would not relent to their
pressure. The officials were ostensibly protesting against the
decision to shift the office citing difficulties in admitting
their children to school. The Government would arrange for their
admission, and they need not harbour any fears on that account,
she added.
Ms. Satish announced the institution of two awards - Kishora
Prathibhe and Bala Prathibhe awards - to encourage children
excelling in fine arts. Children would be selected on the basis
of their performance during State-level competitions which would
be organised by the Department of Kannada and Culture. The Bala
Prathibhe award, which would comprise a cash prize of Rs. 5,000,
would be presented to children under five years, while the
Kishora Prathibhe award, for children between five and 19 years
of age, would carry a cash prize of Rs. 10,000, Ms. Satish added.
The Minister said that first such contest would be held in
Bangalore on December 10, 2000, and music, dance, folk art and
painting competitions would be held. The competitors would be
selected from the divisional contests to be held throughout the
State on December 6. The awards would be presented at a function
in Bangalore on December 14, Ms. Satish added.
