Grants to Azad institute revived

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 3. The State Government has revived the annual grants to the Abdul Kalam Azad Oriental Research Institute at Public Gardens in the city and renewed the building lease, which were suspended some time ago.

This was announced by Mr. Jannat Hussain, Principal Secretary, Social Welfare Department, while participating as chief guest at a function where ``History of Modern Deccan, Volume I'' was released by Prince Muffakham Jah Bahadur. Mr. Jannat Hussain said he had taken up the issue of renewing grants to the Institute with the Minister for Municipal Administration and Wakfs, Mohd N. Farooq, ``who expressed surprise on coming to know that the grants to the institute were stopped''.

He said at the initiative of the Minister, a GO was issued renewing the lease of the building and reviving grants. He lauded the efforts of the institute in preserving the rich heritage.

The book, edited by Prof.A.R. Kulkarni and Dr.M.A. Nayeem, is part of the ``History of Deccan'' project covering early, medieval and modern history of Deccan.

Mahmood Bin Muhammad, president of the Institute, who presided, said the Institute was set up in 1958 in deference to the wishes of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru that an institute be named after Maulana Azad.

The institute functioned from 1964 in the premises in Public Gardens, which served as Niaz Khana, poor-feeding centres when Nizam used to offer prayers in the adjoining mosque. The stoppage of grants by the Government hampered the research work, he said.
