Fake passport racket busted, 5 arrested

BANGALORE, DEC. 3. The Bangalore Airport Police have unearthed a major racket involving a group of people who were creating fake passports and sending illiterate women to work to the Gulf. Five persons have been arrested in this connection.

Police said that on Saturday 16 illiterate women who were to board a flight (IC-977) to Muscat came for emigration clearance at the airport.

During the scrutiny of their documents, passport and visa, the police found discrepancies with regard to emigration check and the women were not allowed to board the flight. During interrogation, it came to light that the women were illiterates. Police suspected foul play and registered a case under the Emigration Act, 1983.

On the basis of the information given by the women, a police team arrested five persons from areas surrounding the airport.

The names of the accused were given as Sharief Ahmed, Devanathan and Yusuf of Bangalore, and Unani and Venkatasubbaiah of Andhra Pradesh.

The accused, who were agents for those running the racket, had come to see off the women at the airport. The key players are yet to be nabbed and investigations are on.
