ANZ International plans jewellery shows in U.S.
By P. Narasimhan
CHENNAI, DEC. 3. ANZ International Trade & Marketing Associates,
a private trade show organiser, has drawn up plans to organise a
month-long jewellery exhibition in the U.S., spread across five
cities.
Mr. Syed Zakir Ahmed, Managing Director, ANZ International, told
this correspondent that the jewellery market in the U.S. was yet
to be fully tapped by Indian jewellers.
``We will be organising five jewellery exhibitions between April
27 and May 27 next year in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Dallas,
Chicago and New York. We have a list of invitees drawn from
associations in the U.S., and the exhibition would be held three
days a week for five weeks. Over a dozen leading jewellers are
expected to participate in the road show. The American community
will have an opportunity to have a glimpse of the latest Indian
designed jewels,'' Mr. Ahmed said.
The next jewellery show is to be held in Singapore in September.
The first fair held there had evoked good response and drew
nearly 15,000 visitors with a total business of nearly Rs. 60
crores. A number of retailers from Chennai participated in the
fair and sold across the counter besides taking export orders.
Garmentech, a similar exhibition for the garment sector, is to be
conducted in Dhaka, Bangladesh, between November 8 and 11 next
year. During Garmentech International 2000 at New Delhi held
recently, business negotiations worth Rs. 500 crores took
place'', Mr. Ahmed added. The four day event had over 30,000
visitors from all over the country as well as from U.A.E., Sri
Lanka, Bangladesh and Singapore. ANZ got international
recognition only after the Delhi event, he said.
``The garment industry is India's second largest foreign exchange
earner, next only to gem and jewellery. We act as the catalyst
between buyers and sellers and we have considerable expertise and
knowledge in conducting exhibitions,'' he said.
Mr. Ahmed said ANZ had just finalised an agreement with Dubai-
based Al Sajer Information Services, the largest trade show
organiser in that region. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) had
been signed for conducting exhibitions in the Arab region. Under
the agreement, ANZ jointly with Al Sajer will conduct exhibitions
on diabetes, hospitals and health, garments and jewellery.
Negotiations were under way with two trade show organisers in the
U.S. and Germany, Mr. Ahmed pointed out.
``Our aim is to own a trade fair complex and provide all the
infrastructure / facilities to organise international trade shows
and exhibitions,'' he said. Headquartered in Chennai, ANZ has a
network of offices in Mumbai, Delhi and most of the major cities
in India.
