Australia wins World Cup
KUALA LUMPUR, DEC. 3. Australia's Karrie Webb and Rachel
Hetherington made a dramatic comeback on Sunday on the final day
of the first ever women's golf World Cup to edge overnight leader
Sweden out by two strokes.
The Australians shot a three-day total of 275 while Swedish
sisters Annika Sorenstam and Charlotta finished on 277 at the
Mines Resort and Golf Club here.
Playing to an individual medal format in the final round, World
No. 1 Webb carded a four-under 68 while Hetherington shot a one-
over 73.
Annika played consistent golf for a two-under par 70 but
Charlotta's game was in shambles as she struggled to post a four-
over 76.
Sweden, which had an overnight lead of three strokes coming into
the final round, was six shots ahead of the Australians after the
third hole, but went through a slump after the sixth hole.
Sweden was seven strokes behind the Australians after the ninth
hole and despite rallying on the back nine, the Aussies
maintained their lead to win.
The victory means the Aussies have now added their fourth World
Cup to their already existing rugby World Cup, cricket World Cup
and Rugby league World Cup. Sweden collected $140,000 as runner-
up.
