Curfew in Gujarat town
By Our Special Correspondent
GANDHINAGAR, DEC. 4. An indefinite curfew has been clamped in
Navsari in south Gujarat where communal disturbances occurred
this afternoon. The police fired six rounds and burst teargas
shells to disperse stone-throwing mobs. One person sustained a
stab injury and more than 15 shops and cabins were set ablaze.
Trouble arose when some people tried to prevent a truck carrying
cows allegedly to an illegal slaughter house. The protestors
attacked shops belonging to another community. As the situation
worsened in the afternoon, member of both communities indulged in
arson and stone throwing. Four persons were injured in stone
throwing. Twenty three persons were arrested for rioting.
The Minister of State for Home, Mr. Haren Pandya, said three
additional companies of the State Reserve Police had been
deployed at Navsari.
