A website to safeguard parents

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI, DEC. 5.

It seemed straight out of his movie ``Imtihaan.'' Yet Mr. Vinod Khanna, MP, was enacting a different role here today when he launched Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh's website -- Parentsindia.com -- to safeguard the interests of parents in education.

Like school masters of old, with a serious air about him, Mr. Khanna started speaking on what needs to be done to make education reach the unreached. ``There is a big need for interaction between teachers, parents and students and I think the site will serve the purpose,'' he said talking of Parentsindia.com.

However, fee hike was not the real issue as there were many other pressing problems in education that needs to be addressed.``I come from a constituency which is rural. There are 1600 schools and I know their state -- no teachers and no teaching for months. We have a long way to go, but I have full faith in the Government which is committed to education,'' he said.

While the other guests gathered, the Minister of State for Human Resource Development, Shahnawaz Hussain; Dr. Harsh Vardhan and Mr. Vijay Goel, also emphasised the need to upgrade public schools, it was Mr. Vinod Khanna who set the tone by pointing out that the public must support such causes.

Mr. Vijender Kumar, President of Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh, said that ``commercialisation'' of public education needs to be opposed tooth and nail.``By launching this website, we are strengthening the movement and the fight against monopoly of education by the rich,'' he said.

While the site has interactive modules for parents and teachers, it also has other interesting features like online poll for the month, online forums, students voice, online chat zone, helpline counseling, file your grievance, hotnews and notice-board. The site also has details on the ``fee anomaly statutory committee'' of the Delhi Abhibhavak Mahasangh.
