'A crusader for the poor'
NEW DELHI, DEC. 6. The veteran social worker, Baba Amte, was
today conferred the prestigious Dr. Ambedkar International Award
for Social Change in recognition for his services in espousing
the cause of the exploited and underprivileged and his fight
against injustice and inequality.
The award, which carries a cash award of Rs. 15 lakhs and a
citation, was presented by the President, Mr. K.R. Narayanan, at
Rashtrapati Bhavan at a glittering ceremony in the presence of
the Vice-President, Mr. Krishan Kant, the Speaker of the Lok
Sabha, Mr. G.M.C. Balayogi and several eminent personalities.
Baba Amte, who is the recipient of several international and
national awards including the Magsaysay, Gandhi Peace Prize and
Padma Vibhushan, has worked tirelessly to check ``religious
fundamentalism, linguistic and territorial bickerings and
communal hatred'' and undertook a Bharat Jodo Yatra in 1985 from
Kanyakumari to Jammu for the purpose. Conferring the award, the
President noted that Baba Amte had devoted his whole life for
social revolution and the spiritual enlightenment of man and
society.
