HC stays engineering admissions under sports quota

By Our Legal Correspondent

HYDERABAD, DEC. 6. Mr. Justice E. Dharma Rao of the AP High Court on Wednesday 'stayed' the admissions in engineering colleges of the State under the sports quota. The counseling for the sports quota is to begin from Friday.

These orders were passed in a batch of writ petitions filed by several students challenging the constitutional validity of the GOMs no 103 issued on July 15 this year. The petitioners complained that the priorities for various sports and the events were changed by the Government without any rational basis. The Government had earmarked some seats in the first year Engineering for sportspersons. The sportspersons who pass the qualifying examination and obtain rank in the EAMCET are eligible to be considered for admission. The Government had earlier issued various orders indicating the priorities for the sports and level of events. Participation in the international and national level events in some spots are given priority over other students who participate in other events.

The contention of the petitioners is that the Government had issued orders in July changing the priorities. The petitioners argued that the change in priorities will adversely affect them and the Government resorted to issuance of this GO without any rhyme or reason. The Government argued that the counselling may go on and the matter can be decided later. Mr. Justice Dharma Rao felt that admissions based upon the impugned GO cannot be permitted at this stage and stayed the admission process. The case is adjourned to next Thursday.
