Fragile beauties
BE IT authentic Mughlai biryani or the oh-so-veg colourful salad,
there is nothing like serving them in complementary crockery.
Glass, melamine and crystal tableware not only enhance the appeal
of your exotic preparations but also make a subtle statement of
your taste and lifestyle.
Having been in the business for 110 years, Currimbhoys (26
Evening Bazaar, phone 5353857) has carved an unmistakable niche
for itself in the crockery business. Coinciding with its 110th
anniversary, Currimbhoys is organising a month-long Christmas
sale of crockery and kitchenware. And yes, if you are one of
those looking for stylish stuff with attractive price tags, this
one-stop-shop is the right place for you.
Sitting amidst racks of fragile beauties in various hues is Navaz
N. Currimbhoy, partner, who waxes eloquent about the firm's
penchant for style and quality. The latest in the range includes
the versatile bake-and-serve dishes.
The microwave-friendly collection comprises bowls and dishes in
various sizes and the styling is simplistic. "Modern women prefer
cookware that can be used in the kitchen and on the table," he
says pointing out to an impressive line-up of such multi-purpose
glassware (Rs 200 to Rs 1,500).
Other unique inclusions to the Christmas range are the dinner
sets in glass and bone China (from Rs.1,800 for 23 pieces to
Rs.4,000 for 30 pieces in bone China) and the co-ordinated sets
of glasses - six sets of three matching glasses each - for
drinks, juice and water (priced around Rs 600).
The Italian decanter set, with one mega jar and six sleek glasses
is another attraction. Like the decanter set, a number of these
delicate creations are imported. But though seemingly fragile,
they are sturdy and can be handled even by the maid without
hassles.
Twisted stem glasses, crystal trays and utilities (24 per cent
lead, hand cut), light, heat-proof, hand painted cook-and-serve
tableware, cutlery (72 piece set in stainless steel with gold-
plated trimmings, Rs. 4,940. It comes in a compact suitcase),
serving bowls with matching minis, vibrant soup and dessert bowls
etc are sure to beckon attention in this three-floor showroom.
The kitchenware section with a whole new range of stainless steel
vessels and casseroles and the appliances section are also a big
draw. And yes, it is worth an arduous journey through the rickety
roads of Evening Bazaar. For those residing in the other side of
Chennai, Currimbhoys has a sales outlet at Adyar(43/1, Besant
Avenue, near Aavin milk bar).
