By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI, DEC. 7. More than 20,000 birds of different species have arrived at the Vedanthangal birds sanctuary, this year.

Wildlife officials say the recent rains had brought in more birds to the sanctuary. Normally the tank would be filled to the brim after rains and the birds would stay at the sanctuary till February. But at present the water level was only one and half metres deep, which would last a month, feel the officials.

White Ibis and Grey Pelicans, the two major attractions have already arrived at the sanctuary, wildlife department officials said. Every year Open Billed Storks were the first ones to arrive and this year too they had congregated in good number.

This particular species carried out two cycles of breeding in the sanctuary and they had started the first cycle, officials said. Spoon Billed Storks, Grey Pelicans, a few varieties of Egrets, Glossy and White Ibis' and cormorants were the other species found in the sanctuary.

Birds started arriving at Vedanthangal from September 29 and in the corresponding period last year they arrived only on October 10, officials said.

The sanctuary was officially opened to the visitors from November 1. With more birds available for study, nearly 200 persons visit the sanctuary every day, officials added.
