Opposition gains in Ghana
By M.S. Prabhakara
ACCRA: First results in Ghana's general elections have gone
predominantly in favour of the National Patriotic Party, the
principal opposition party in Ghana. At noon on Friday (5.30 p.m.
IST), the ruling National Democratic Congress won only in two
parliamentary constituencies in Brong-Ahafo and Upper Region, in
contrast to the NPP which had won in 25 constituencies. The NDC
has not won a single seat till now in the Greater Accra Region
(22) and the Ashanti Region (33), which together account for more
than a quarter of the total number of constituencies (200). In
all the results declared till now, the party that has won in the
Parliamentary poll has also won the Presidential poll. In the
elections four years ago, while the President, Mr. Jerry
Rawlings, won in 140 constituencies, his party, the NDC won only
in 133 constituencies. However, till now the NPP nominee for
President, Mr. John Kufor, has carried all the constituencies
that the NPP contestants for Parliament have won.
