BSF will be inducted when needed: Kharge
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, DEC. 8. The Home Minister, Mr. Mallikarjun Kharge, has
said that the Border Security Force will be inducted into the
operations against the forest brigand, Veerappan, when needed.
Addressing presspersons today, he said that no time- limit could
be placed for the arrival of the BSF unit. He did not confirm
whether the BSF had already arrived in Coimbatore to take up the
operations. However, Mr. Kharge said that at least two BSF
companies would be stationed in the State for the operations and
a few of them in Coimbatore.
The Minister said that there was no confusion about commanding
the unified force of the two States. The Tamil Nadu Inspector-
General of Police, Mr. Balachandran, would be the joint chief.
Questioned about the status of the State's Additional Director-
General of Police, Mr. H.T. Sangliana, Mr. Kharge said that he
would guide the STF. He added that the STF would now work under
the chief of the Karnataka State Reserve Police (Mr. Sangliana)
and not under the Additional DGP (Law and Order) as hitherto.
Meet on City traffic
Earlier in the day, Mr. Kharge chaired a meeting on traffic
regulation in Bangalore attended by the Home Commissioner, Mr.
M.B. Prakash, the Director-General of Police, Mr. C. Dinakar, and
the Commissioner of Police, Mr. T. Madiyal. The meeting was held
pursuant to certain suggestions made by the Chief Minister, Mr.
S.M. Krishna.
The Home Minister said that a proposal had been made to the
Government that the entire proceeds of the fines collected by the
traffic police in the City and elsewhere should be made available
to the force for defraying its expenditure on traffic management.
The question of selecting a place for parking near the Mallya
Hospital in Bangalore was considered. Mr. Kharge said that a spot
near a storm water drain at one end of the Kanteerava Stadium
could be utilised for parking. The Additional Chief Secretary had
been asked to select a site for building a station for private
buses either on Kanakapura Road or Tumkur Road. The Bangalore
Mahanagara Palike or the BDA would provide the site.
Mr. Kharge appealed to the devotees of both the Dattatreya Peetha
and the ``dargah'' of Bababudan to maintain peace. Datta Jayanti
was being held along with Ramzan. The Additional DGP (Law and
Order) was camping at the place. The Minister in-charge of the
district, Mr. D.B. Chandre Gowda (Law and Parliamentary Affairs),
and Mr. Sageer Ahmed (Transport), were also in Chikmagalur to
ensure that the religious festivals went off smoothly.
