Chucking row continues

By Steve Whiting

CHRISTCHURCH, DEC. 8. The chucking row at the women's World Cup here reached the silly stage on Friday when it was announced that Indian seamer Renu Margrate was one of no fewer than three bowlers that had been reported by the umpires. Yet the one many people suspected most was not amongst them.

People were even more amused to see that New Zealand spinner Erin McDonald was included even though one England player said, ``that's daft - she's never even thrown a fit.''

The three accused were Indian seam bowler Renu Margrate and Caroline Salomons of The Netherlands as well as McDonald. The one who escaped was Indian off spinner Purnima Rau whose name had always cropped up whenever the subject arose.

``The umpires have not `called' the bowlers for a no- ball during a match because they are not certain the action is illegal but clearly they believe there is a case to answer and have rightly recommended further investigation,'' says the report.

It is clear that tournament director Tim Murdoch has been pushed into releasing Friday's report by a rash of speculation, including two programmes on New Zealand TV.

In the meanwhile, South Africa beat Sri Lanka, which had five run outs in its innings, by six wickets to join New Zealand and India on six points behind Australia, which has eight. Everyone has now played four games.

The scores: South Africa 158 for four off 45.4 overs (D. Terblanche 53 not out) bt Sri Lanka 134 for nine off 50 overs.
