'Accord priority to industrial safety'
By Our Staff Reporter
CHENNAI, DEC. 9. The importance of adhering to safety norms in
different spheres of life was underscored at the State-level
safety awards (for 1999) distribution function of the National
Safety Council of India, Tamil Nadu chapter (NSIC-TNC).
Felicitating the awardees on Friday, Mr. V. Ponmudi, Chief
Inspector of Factories, said safety was not an issue pertaining
to industrial units alone as it touched all facets of life.
Urging the winners to sustain the tempo of safety ``forever'', he
pointed out that life was precious and any amount of compensation
would not suffice for its loss. All employees of an industrial
unit were equally responsible for promoting a safe environment.
Presenting the awards, Mr. S. Veeramuthumoni, Deputy Chairman,
Chennai Port Trust, hailed the activities of the Council and said
better productivity was closely linked to the adherence to
safety. Saying that the term safety also included protection of
the environment and welfare of the employees, he stressed on
creating more awareness on safety measures.
Among those who felicitated the awardees were Mr. R.
Thiruvengadam, Member-Secretary, Chief Inspectorate of Factories.
Mr. D. Vasudevan, the NSIC-TNC Chairman, said posters carrying
messages of safety were now being issued in Tamil. The awards, he
added, were for motivating the industries and their employees.
While the award of honour went to the SPIC, Tuticorin, the star
award was received by Manali Petrochemicals, Cetex
Petrochemicals, Tamil Nadu Newsprint, Heavy Water Plant and
Tamilnadu Petroproducts. The appreciation award was bagged by
Zeneca Agrochemicals, Indian Additives, Chennai Petroleum
Corporation, Cordite Factor, Tube Products of India, Indian Rare
Earths. India Pistons and BHEL received awards for sending
maximum number of entries in the competitions.
Awards were also distributed to winners of poetry, essay, poster
and other competitions.
