Postal department to go hi-tech
CALCUTTA, DEC. 11. The postal department is planning to be a
certifying authority of digital signatures so that it could
augment its money order services by using the Internet, the
Controller of Certifying Authorities, Mr. K.N. Gupta said.
``Using digital signature of postmasters, money order
transactions could be a matter of a fraction of a second,'' Mr.
Gupta said on Sunday.
The department had put up 75 V-SATs to make money order services
better, but the use of Internet could make it real fast,
benefitting the common people immensely, he said at the
sidelights of the International Conference on Cryptology,
`Indocrypt 2000'.
The department, however, was yet to formally apply to the
Controller of Certifying Authorities, Mr. Gupta said.
As per the Information Technology Act, any organisation seeking
to use digital signature has to apply to the controller of
certifying authorities.
