Carols for a cause

IT IS never too early for some good carols! The Madras Christian College organised one of the first carol shows this season, on Saturday last.

The show was organised to raise funds for its outreach programme in the Maternity and Child Welfare Centre and The Oxfam School.

Carols With a Mission began with the rendering of the songs of the Yuletide season by Mellow Circle.

This was followed by the choristers of Students Christian Movement of Madras Christian College and the final rendition: Mozart's Anthem: Gloria was by both groups.

The Child Welfare Centre and School were established by the College in the heart of Tambaram in the early 1900s. Due to paucity of funds, the service activities of the Centre were gradually withdrawn. Apparently, this resulted in poor maintenance of the existing building, now in a state of disrepair.

The Student Christian Movement of the College had taken the issue up and decided to rejuvenate this centre by organising a health awareness camp in October 2000. As they conducted the camp, it became apparent to them that the neighbourhood community responded positively.

The need for those services, as rendered by them, was also established. Funds had to be raised for that. And what better way to do it in December, than by caroling!
