BM Birla Science Centre Award for Nobel Laureate

HYDERABAD, DEC. 11. The Nobel Laureate, Prof. Steven Chu, was
presented with the B. M. Birla Science Centre's `Life Time
Achievement in Science Award' at the Birla Science Centre here on
Monday. The Centre director, Dr. B.G.Sidharth, presented the
award.
Later, delivering a lecture `Holding on to Atoms and Bio-
molecules with light', Prof. Chu of the Stanford University, USA,
detailed the developments in the fields of laser cooling, atom
trapping and atom optic techniques.
Apart from helping in navigation of ships, airplanes and cars,
the Global Positioning Satellite System was also being used in
the studies pertaining to the motion of tectonic plates and
global warming, he said.
