Asia Cup may be rescheduled

By Rizwan Ehsan Ali

KARACHI, DEC. 11. The Asia Cup is likely to be rescheduled and the final decision will be taken in the next Asian Cricket Council meeting, an official of ACC informed on Monday.

Pakistan is due to host the event from April 15 to 30 in 2002 but Zakir Hussain Syed, secretary ACC said that there was a possibility of bringing forward the dates.

``The ACC meeting will be held in Sharjah in April during which it will be decided if it's possible to first organise the Asian Test Championship in September 2001 and then if Pakistan can host the one-day Asia Cup sometime early in 2002,'' Zakir said.

Zakir also said that Pakistan would be hosting the final of the Asian Test Championship and in case India qualifies, and he hoped it would not give ``walk over'' if it has to play for the title against Pakistan.

Like other Pakistan Cricket Board officials, Zakir was also hopeful that India would visit Pakistan for both the Asia Cup and the Asian Test Championship.

``It was sad that the Indian government refused to allow it's team to compete against Pakistan for the planned three-Test series but I hope it will not do the same when the Asia Cup starts,'' he said.

However, Zakir said that whether India sends its team for Asia Cup or not, Pakistan would organise the event.
